Bariatric Surgery Help For The Dangerously Obese

November 3, 2010

Bariatric surgery or also known as weight loss surgery is a type of process done on people who are dangerously obese, for the purpose of losing weight. Doctors and surgeons will only do this as a last resort following failure on medical treatment therapy and a diet program. Make sure you discuss this through with a local medical professional.

Bariatric Surgery weight loss is achieved by the reduction of the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device known as gastric banding or through the removal of a portion of the stomach named sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, (big words I know) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch known as gastric bypass surgery which is the term we hear used most.

Long-term studies are show us today that the procedures are cause significant long-term loss of weight, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a reduction in mortality of 23% from 40%

So who should have this treatment?

The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends bariatric surgery for obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, and for people with BMI 35 and serious coexisting medical conditions such as diabetes. (Information from some Wikipedia research links included)

However, research is emerging that suggests bariatric surgery could be appropriate for those with a BMI of 35 to 40 with no comorbidities or a BMI of 30 to 35 with significant comorbidities.

Guide-lines to surgery should be considered as a treatment option for patients with:

BMI of 40 kg/m2 or greater

Failed an suitable exercise and diet program with or without adjunctive drug therapy

Who also may have existing obesity-related comorbid conditions, such as: Hypertension

Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Diabetes Mellitus

Hyperlipidemia

and obstructive Sleep Apnea

It is also important to note many medical advisors say patients should be referred to high-volume centres with surgeons experienced in bariatric surgery.
